Steve and Rob - One afternoon

 

Here's a little gem....

An afternoon of hangin out with my friend Steve ( Reay ). 

Steve came over to my house and decided we were doing an album. That afternoon.
We had no songs, had not rehearsed, and frankly i thought the idea was a bit..... ambitious.
Steve was convincing however and soon enough we had 14 songs and a 25 minute album!
All recorded hastily on my Sony mono walkman for a real low-fi sound.

Unlike the Rob and Stefan demos (where we'd actually rehearsed) these are right off the cuff tunes never attempted or even thought of before or after. 

We used to make a lot of home-brew me and Steve. It got quite competitive over who could make the strongest shit. Steve ended up being the winner with his 11% home-brewed lager. After drinking large amounts of that one night i barely made it home (i lived about 200 meters away).

Secret Circle

Here's another monster from the tapebox....

Think spicey cup of tea, meditating on a persian rug while having a massage. Instumental journeys developing (or unravelling) all on their lonesome. Galaxies collide.... and divide.... and seperate.

These are lengthy jams with my friend David Rayner and a few other crew. Recorded 1995 or thereabouts. Every few weeks we'd get together and bash out a few numbers. We used to swap instruments a bit too so it's hard for me to tell who's playing what but i'm playing drums for about half of it and guitar for the rest. And also maybe bass on a track or two. David Rayner plays bass, drums and possibly guitar and some other percussive instruments. Other crew involved include Hilary (percussion (tabla / bongos etc)), another David (percussion) my ex-girlfriend Sonya (keyboards) and a hippy called Jody on guitar (if it sounds 'funky' it's probably him playing, not me). David recorded all of this with one stereo microphone and a tapedeck. I can't remember what type it was but i recall it being rather high end gear and hence these recordings sound excellent aside from the occasional imbalance in the volumes of things.
At one point you can hear i'm playing guitar far too loudly and hence get told off by all present.

We never had a name for this project and we never played live either so i've taken the liberty of calling it 'Secret Circle'. 
Recorded at 58 Matai St West, Christchurch, New Zealand. Another great old mansion that was knocked down to make way for numerous townhouses. Hooray for progress..... 

At least the reverberations of the old house continue to bounce around the universe.

Bob's top 10 for 2012

Recently i picked up a local music rag with all the writers listing their fave Top 10 albums for 2012. 'Burn after reading' comes to mind. 
I didn't like any of it one bit.
Therefore i've come up with my own Top 10. Bob's Top of the Pops.
Lap these up chums. Do someone a favour and put one of these in their xmas stocking.
You could make a friend for life (or an enemy forever.....).

Into the void - Live at the dux de lux

I remember sometime in 1989 or thereabouts, my flatmate Dianna came home from seeing these guys and said to me: "my god rob, you HAVE to see Into The Void!" 
She was emphatic. 
It was basically an order. 
So weeks later i obeyed...... like a trained seal.
The pub was dark, the red light glowed, the smoke machine bellowed and Into The Void screeched and growled through a sinister set of art rock noise to the arm folded, seemingly unimpressed masses. They were awesome! I was gobsmacked.
I also recall a time a year or two after that event when i dragged my friend Steve to see them. he was involved in the scene in Dunedin and hated Christchurch bands. Into the void changed his mind. He just stood there with his mouth open (though i have a feeling medication contributed to his feelings of elation).
ITV are survivors too. Still playing occasionally, even though half the band live in Melbourne and the other half in Christchurch.
This live recording is made all the more poignant by the fact that the dux (currently reinventing itself elsewhere) is no longer in its original location,  thanks to the enormous earthquake that flattened half the city. It sux not having the dux.... you couldn't beat the location.
I don't know who recorded this but the quality is really good. There are also two songs (trk 4 & 8) whose titles remain unknown thus far. If someone knows what they are (James.... i know you're out there....) please enlighten us.

Rob and Stefan's manic guitar sessions

I used to jam with a guy called Stefan back in '92 -'93. Our general routine was thus: Stefan would come over to my house with his guitar and two half gallon jars. Then we would walk to Harringtons brewery and get the jars filled with beer. Upon returning to the house we would plug into my Fender amp, drink beer and make some noise. Most of these sessions i would record a few tunes that seemed at the time to have some merrit. These tapes have been at the bottom of my cassette box for 20 years or so and i've only now ripped them to digital media (ditching about half of it due to either poor quality recording, or if it was simply rubbish i wouldn't let my dog listen to).
We weren't really planning a band or anything but considered playing in cafes (or somewhere other than pubs) for a laugh but that never eventuated. Sad, because i would have loved to torment the villagers with this crazy shit. Not all of this stuff is sonically challenging though. There are a few mellow and spacious moments where the villagers are lulled into a false sense of security.

Stefan's guitar sound is more 'bass' sounding due to to fact that he ripped the frets out of it and half the time he's playing it like a bass too. Fingers, not picks. There's no overdubs or anything on these tracks. Just the two of us playing guitars and drinking.

Curse of the Panther

In 1997, The Black Panthers were formed. Consisting of Matt Alien, myself (as Bob cadillac), Leon Zchivago and Ayatolla Blitzkreig, we were what rock n roll nightmares are made of. Far too many leadbreaks, excessive screaming, wearing our girlfriends clothes, never playing sober.....breaking things.....it just got worse really. Loads of fun though!

We released two vinyls for Kato records, the first was a 7" single and the second a full length LP.

We also made a few videos which i'll post one or two of shortly on this blog.

This recording i'm posting here is was our first and two songs were selected from this for the 7" single. We'd only been together a few months before this was recorded on my Teac reel to reel by David Rayner at cambridge tce. Look for the vinyls on discogs if your interested.

Mothgods live

Here's a Mothgods vid from 1995. This song isn't on the album download on this blog so you're a lucky chimp to be able to hear it at all. More earthquakes in chch today. Glad i'm not there.

Bob Cadillac - I want you / Don't wait up for me girl

Here's a couple of tunes I recorded a few years back. One being a version of 'I want you' by the fabulous Troggs. I really liked the MC5 version of this song. The way they slowed it down made it sound so epically heavy.
This arrangements even slower! You can't beat the Troggs' original though. Recorded in 1966 as a B side to 'With a girl like you' it sure is punk before punk. Tribal thunder recorded this track and played drums. Joe played bass and Kris screamed. I'm on guitar duties and vox as per usual.
The second song is one of my originals. Recorded around 2003 in some studio / rehearsal room out in the burbs of melbourne. The drummer showed up pasted, but we still managed to sound ok. Happy listening!

Cadillac - 'everyday' vid

Around about 2002, i started a band called 'cadillac' in melbourne. There were basically two line-ups. One never quite got off the ground sadly, as two people had to leave the country! This is the second line up that did finally start gigging around town. This gig was filmed at the Arthouse in 2004 and was probably the best we ever got to tape. Clones - ha ha ha

Here's a video my mate Tribal Thunder made.
We had an act called 'clones' going for a while there with Tribal doing all the music and Mark 'Chinaski' doin vocals and me doing nothing at all except drinking beer in the corner.
Finally Tribal thunder let me do something and this was it. All music by Tribal thunder with me on vocals. A version of the old Flipper classic ' ha ha ha'.
